As with any craft, the more you practice, the better you become. Woodworking is no different. The beauty of woodworking is 'practice' projects can be amazingly useful. With a small investment of materials and time, some very practical items can become advantageous additions to the household.
Box - Sounds simple. A sturdy wooden box can lend itself to many uses. With a nice coat of polyurethane it can serve as an ideal storage space for magazines. If it's more of a temporary holding spot, keeping a pillow handy will let you convert the upended box into extra seating while entertaining.
Freestanding Towel Stand
Coffee table - It takes little time to make a simple coffee table. Very basic designs can be found easily on the internet. The finishes determine how elegant or rustic the appearance. With a strong construction and a cushion, again, this can double as seating.
Bird House - Old license plates from the state a person was born make a great added touch to these when giving them as gifts. Two minutes on an internet map site can also yield the miles from where a person lives now to their hometown. Make a little sign with this to add, and the birdhouse becomes very personal.
Spice Racks - As with many things, the simpler the better. Keep them shallow as most herbs and spices come in small containers. And, Kitchens always need free space.
Free Standing Paper Towel Rack - A simple square base and a fitted dowel rod make a quick and very handy paper towel holder. A coat of poly makes it nice in any decor. Gloss tint or pant can make it match specifically.
Wood boxes for houses with log fires - This is a quick project that make a very helpful addition to fireside. It reduces bark shed mess, and can be tailored to any decor with stencils or faux finishes.
Corrals for your trash cans - A well-made fence to set your trash cans inside prevents nocturnal raiders such as raccoons from turning over cans and creating mess and extra work. It also looks tidy and can add curb appeal to your home if it is on the market. It's an easy way to add a unique feature to the property.
Stands to make a tabletop fan into a freestanding fan - during the warmer months of the year it can be a life saver to have a tabletop fan that you can quickly and easily put anywhere you need it.
Compartmentalized shelves for garages - Garages get cluttered. Getting tools and holiday decoration up off the floor creates space and order. It also adds a very lived in feel, also a nice selling point if a home owner decides to place their house on the market.
Door stop - It might be nothing more than a simple wedge of wood, or it might even be a more complicated stopper that is fixed to the skirting. What's important is that you can use your imagination to do something special with even the simplest of projects.
These projects barely scratch the surface of what is possible, but given time you will soon be able to identify all the areas open to clever solutions. Nothing is more satisfying that solving a problem with something you made yourself.
